Roboteon’s SVP of Product Raj Senguttuvan was quoted extensively in an article on fulfillment orchestration and Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), in an interesting magazine called Workplace Material Handling& Safety.

The article was submitted to the publication in an arrangement it has with MHI’s Solutions Community group, of which Roboteon is a member.

The premise of the article is that there has been a surge of interest in so-called mini-load ASRS and other goods-to-person systems, increasingly paired with AMRs to bring goods to or away from the ASRS.

However, the article  notes, “the downside is that too often, it [ASRS] operates as an island of automation. The result is often costly bottlenecks.”

Too much product overwhelms the robots, while too little means they’re left standing idle. “You’re driving with one foot on the gas pedal, and one on the brake if you don’t have some sort of software layer to manage everything,” says Senguttuvan.

The article notes that for a growing number of warehouses, that layer is beginning to emerge in the form of orchestration software. While this can look like many different forms of software, Gartner has coined a new umbrella term for it, called Multiagent Orchestration Platform (MAOP) software.

“The term is not yet ubiquitous, but it describes that upper level of software that sits above all your facility’s automation, tying it together,” the magazine notes.

We’ll note such orchestration capabilities across multiple automation types is delivered with Robteon’s Robotics Fulfillment and Orchestration Platform.

“MAOP is an evolving space, but it will wind up with some pieces of WMS, large pieces of WES, and some pieces of WCS,” Senguttuvan told the magazine. “If you were to draw circles around each of those, the MAOP will take pieces of each and encompass them all.”
